Will a Fat Free Diet Reduce Weight?
We all know that we need to eat healthily in order to stay in shape and to help us lose weight. In these modern times there are hundreds of diets to try and it can be confusing to know which ones will benefit you and which ones are a complete waste of your time. Some of the diets may work for some individuals and not for others; different diets affect different people in different ways.
One question that is often asked is “Will a fat free diet reduce weight?” Well according to the American Heart Association the answer is no. Firstly, foods that are labelled as “fat free” don’t always mean that they have low or no calories at all.
Although the fat is removed the food may have something else added in to give it taste or texture. A fat free diet could ultimately be adding the calories back into the product if substitutes such as sugar, salt and maltodextrin are added. Although there may be no fat in the products they may have a higher calorie count. It is best to check what the calorie count on the label of the product is before deciding whether to buy it. Another thing to keep vigil about when it comes to fat free food is that it may actually have chemical compounds (fat substitutes) integrated in to them in order to make the food appear “normal”. Another point to remember in relation to a fat free diet is that we actually do need some fat to live and be healthy. It is estimated that we should be consuming at least 30% of our daily calorie intake from fat. We need to eat a healthy amount of the good fats (polyunsaturated, monounsaturated and Omega 3 fatty acids) and lose the bad fats (saturated fats and trans-fatty acids). Eating the good fats is essential for molecule and compound production in the body. Basically put, no fat will affect vital functions that your body needs to perform. All this means that it makes sense to include foods that have these fats in them and eradicate the ones that have the other types of fat. Ultimately, you still need to consume some of the good fats in order for your body to function properly.
The best way, it seems, to lose weight is by following a healthy, balanced diet and ensuring that you do some exercise on a regular basis. This means cutting out all of the junk food from your diet, particularly those that contain saturated fat and trans-fatty acids. Concentrate on eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, lean meat, rice, pasta, fish, legumes and wholegrains. It pays to learn more about what foods are healthy and which you should avoid – and it appears that experts are recommending to stay away from a fat free diet altogether.
The evidence seems to suggest that by undertaking a fat free diet it is likely that you may actually put weight on due to the higher amount of calories in the foods. And of course, we need a certain amount of the right fats in our diet to make sure that our bodies function and perform as they should do.
