It is no new phenomenon that teenagers are concerned about their image and their weight. For many years, peer pressure, the media and the fashion industry have helped ensure that the majority of teens want to lose weight so that they look great. Suitable ways for teens to lose weight are vital because too many teenagers are going about losing weight in completely the wrong way, which could end up making them ill.
It is important that teenagers are aware that it is vital that they lose weight in a healthy way. It should also be recognised that they should be losing weight for the right reasons and not just because their friends are, or they are being called “fat” at school or college. Teenage bodies are still growing and changing and so it is crucial that suitable ways for teens to lose weight are adhered to.
The first step is for a teenager that wants to lose weight to consult a medical professional so they can be mad aware that there are suitable ways for teens to lose weight. They should be able to talk about any issues regarding weight that the teenager may have such as peer pressure, stress, eating disorders and obesity. There should also be a clear plan of action put in place for the teenager to follow so that they lose weight healthily and successfully. Family support is also vital for any teenager who is thinking about losing some weight.
Finding ways for teens to lose weight is difficult as they need to learn about the different food groups and what foods are good for our bodies. This means learning that too much saturated fat is bad for us. A healthy and balanced diet should be followed which includes plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. They should completely avoid foods that have been deep fried or are loaded with sugar and fat. This means cutting out foods such as crisps, chocolate, burgers, chips and cakes. A teenager’s diet should include plenty of healthy foods but it is not always easy to completely cut out all fatty foods. These types of foods could be considered as “treats” if they cannot be completely excluded from the diet but should be eaten in moderation. Drinking plenty of water is also important and contributes to a healthy diet but show me a teenager that will go along with that idea!
This leads to another important element of the ways for teens to lose weight – exercise. Being active on a daily basis, combined with a healthy diet, is one of the best ways for teenagers to lose weight. It is a common obstacle that teenagers consider exercise to be too boring and the addition of modern technology and computer games has added to the challenge of getting them moving. This is why it is important to find a sport or exercise activity that the teenager really enjoys. If they are “into it”, then they are much more likely to do that sport or activity on a regular basis. You may even find that doing a sport or activity as a family will help encourage the teenager to view exercise as fun and not a chore.
A combination of a balanced, healthy diet and regular exercise are the most suitable ways for teens to lose weight. No fad diets or slimming pills will benefit a teenager in any way. The reasons for a teenager to lose weight should be the right ones and not due to any amount of peer pressure to look skinny. Of course, there is no quick fix to losing weight, in relation to adults, children or indeed teenagers; but perseverance, motivation, education about food and a lot of self-discipline will lead to a teenager losing weight and looking and feeling healthy. There certainly are suitable ways for teens to lose weight but in the process the patience of all involved will be sorely tried.
