Finding the Motivation for Weight Loss

Motivation for weight loss is not always easy to find. Sure, initially you are ready to go. You are enthusiastic and hopeful. However, as you encounter obstacles and set backs your enthusiasm begins to wane. The road to a healthier body is not a smooth one. If you allow yourself to continue down this path, you will eventually give up. The key to successful weight loss is not so much the method but how you keep in the right state of mind.
Progress Reports can Help
You can find motivation for weight loss, even after months of dieting, by keeping a diet journal or record. From the beginning, record your weight and daily or weekly pounds lost. The occasional gain may happen, so be honest and record it.  At some point, when you are feeling down about your slow progress, use these records as a self progress report. You can see where you started and how much weight you have lost. Even though you may have gained here and there, you will be pleased to see the pounds are still going negative.

You can keep this record or journal whatever way you like, but the more detailed you are the more motivation for weight loss you will obtain. Consider including a note about daily exercise and meals. This will also serve as a valuable tool should you plateau.  That means weight loss seems to stop and you maintain your current weight, even though you are not where you want to be body-fat wise.  Review your records and see what you did differently during weeks of higher weight loss. Then plan for continued success the next day and every day after.
Friendly Assistance and your Diet
Dieting with a friend can be a great motivation for weight loss. When you have someone else working along with you, there is more desire to stick with it.  Taking the other person’s opinions and needs onboard  can help keep you on your meal plan and exercise schedule. Even if you have a friend who isn’t actually dieting, just having a companion to exercise with regularly can help keep you on track.
Losing weight with a friend is also a good way to provide support during tough times. For some people, obesity causes emotional stress as well as physical. When you diet with a partner, you have someone to turn to during moments of weakness or when you need some weight loss encouragement. Always be prepared to reciprocate however.
Fund a New Wardrobe
One of the things many people look forward to after they reach their goal weight is changing out their wardrobe. Few things are as satisfying as fitting into your ideal clothing and getting rid of your “fat” clothes. Use this as a form of motivation for weight loss. Find a jar, can or other container to collect change. Set an amount, it could be as low as 50 cents or a dollar per pound. Each time you lose weight, make a point to place the correct quantity in the container. For example, at a dollar per pound, if you shed three pounds one week place three dollars in the container. When you have met your weight loss goal, get your wardrobe fund and go shopping!
Motivation for weight loss comes in many different forms. Find the ones that work best for you and get started. You can reach your goals, despite all set backs and obstacles. If you have a fail safe in place to get you moving again, you will succeed!
