Benefits of Challenging Weight Lifting Workouts

Weight lifting is one of the most practised activities around the world and with good reason. Whereas some people are happy just to give their body a quick boost with a spot of aerobics, weight lifting is one of the best all-round activities you can do to contribute to your health and happiness. There are many benefits of challenging weight lifting workouts; pushing your body that little bit further helps you to build your self-confidence as well as your muscles.

One of the best benefits of  weight lifting workouts is that you not only look healthier but you feel healthier. Weight training tones your muscles making you look shapely and fit. Biologically, weight training also helps to raise your basal metabolic rate, which is why more calories are burned by lifting heavy weights instead of just going for a jog or a swim. What’s more, lifting weights regularly means that your body will start to burn calories around the clock, even when you are snoring on your pillow!

Our body is our temple and it pays to look after it well. Weight training is a great way to help keep our bones in good condition, it strengthens them and it can ultimately prevent natural bone loss as we get older. Lifting weights can be effective in reducing the risk of developing diseases such as osteoporosis. Other benefits of challenging weight lifting workouts include a decreased risk of developing adult diabetes or colon cancer and it has been proven that cholesterol can be significantly lowered.

Self image and confidence is important to most of us and intense weight training can help to make us feel good about ourselves. When we train with weights we are strengthening the whole of our body; we can feel fully energised, our mood is boosted and it can help to dissolve those stresses and strains that we face everyday in our hectic lives.

It may not have occurred to you before but weight training is actually an activity that is suitable for most people. There is nothing to stop couples or families from heading to the gym for a challenging workout. If nothing else, it is one way to be able to spend time with your loved ones whereas before you may have all just been doing your own thing. There is also the support and motivation you need to keep going and achieve targets in your weight lifting workouts  when you have family or friends going along for the ride with you.

It is a common misconception that intensive weight lifting workouts are purely for the guys. When you think of female weight lifters, the image conjured up is of professional body-builders who have completely lost their feminine form and are all muscle. Lifting weights alone will not develop unsightly muscles on a woman (unless they spend hours and hours at the gym and take supplements) – it is merely an enjoyable and good way of toning the muscles in the body.

One thing that is closely associated with exercise is diet. If you are serious about lifting weights and are ready to take on more challenging weight lifting workouts, then you are likely to take your diet more seriously. Because the workouts are going to be exhausting, you will need to learn what the correct foods are to eat, how often to eat and how much your portion sizes should be. This will mean that you will be even fitter and healthier than before!
